How Often Should You Really Wash Your Hair?

How Often Should You Really Wash Your Hair?

It’s one of the most common questions when it comes to hair care: How often should I wash my hair? And like most things that matter, the answer isn’t one-size-fits-all, it depends on your hair type, lifestyle and products you're using.

What we do know is that over-washing can strip your scalp of its natural oils, leaving it imbalanced, irritated, and overcompensating with excess oil. On the other hand, not washing enough can lead to buildup, dullness, and a scalp that’s no longer the fertile ground for growth and radiance it’s meant to be.

    Here’s a gentle guide:

    - Oily Scalps & Fine Hair: 2–3 times a week. Use lightweight, SLS and Paraben free formulas like all St. Louis Says products to refresh without stripping.

    - Normal to Dry Hair: Once or twice a week. Allow your scalp’s natural oils to nourish your lengths between washes.

    - Coily, Curly or Thick Hair: Once a week or less. Focus on moisture retention and gentle cleansing to avoid disruption to your natural pattern.

    - After Exercise or Heavy Styling: Use a scalp massager with a lukewarm water rinse, or use dry shampoo between wash days, to keep your crown fresh without overdoing it.

Above all, listen to your scalp. It will tell you when it needs cleansing, and when it needs rest. And with gentle formulas like ours, you can wash as often as you need as we provide salvation for every scalp.

St. Louis Says: Honour the rhythm of thy roots.
